日本の夏の風物詩の1つ「花火」。個人でできる手持ち花火や、日本各地で行われる打ち上げ花火などのように、花火といっても様々なものを思い浮かべると思います。
今回はそんな花火に関係する英語表現をご紹介します。
花火は英語で何という？
そもそも花火を英語で「firework」といいます。fire（火）とwork（作品）を組み合わせた単語ですね。複数形は「fireworks」と言い、基本的に花火は1本/1回で終わることはないため、複数形で使われることが多いです。
花火に関係のある英単語
- sparkler：手持ち花火
- catherine wheel/pinwheel：ねずみ花火（回転花火）
- skyrocket/rocket：打ち上げ花火
- fireworks festival：花火大会
sparkle「閃光/光沢/火の粉」という意味の英単語の語尾をerにすることで「閃光を放つもの/光沢を出すもの」という意味になります。
花火を英語で説明する
線香花火
Sparklers called “senko-hanabi” are traditional fireworks in Japan.「線香花火は日本の伝統的な花火です」
When you light a sparkler, it makes a small red fireball at its tip and gets bigger and bigger.「火をつけると花火の先に火の玉ができ、それがだんだん大きくなっていきます」

花火大会で使える英語表現
実は打ち上げ花火は海外にも存在します。しかし、日本のものとは異なり円筒形のため、日本のような球状のものは海外の方から観た時に驚かれたり絶賛されることが多いです。
