童話を英訳してみたシリーズ8弾。今回は「おむすびころりん（The Rolling Rice Ball）」です。

あらすじ（英訳）
Once upon a time, there lived an old couple who were happy together.
When the old man went to gather firewood, his wife made some rice balls for him.
“Darling, eat them when you get hungry!”
He gets them and says,
“Oh, they look delicious! Thank you Honey.”
Then, he set off for the mountain in good spirits.
He came to to the mountain and was so absorbed in gathering firewood that he forgot about the time.
And before he knew it, it was lunchtime.
“I’m hungry! It’s time for a lunch.”
He sat down on a hill with a good view and opened up the cloth wrapper containing the rice balls.
“Looks so good! Let’s eat!”
Just when the he opened his mouth wide to eat the rice ball, his hand slipped and he dropped the rice ball…
The rice ball rolls down the slope of the mountain, rolling faster and faster.
“Wait! Please stop!”
He ran after it desperately but the rice ball fell into a hole in the ground…
However, the diaper rolled away and fell into a hole in the ground with a “thump! and fell into a hole in the ground.
He looked into the hole, but it was dark and he couldn’t see anything.
“OMG! That’s too bad. What a waste…”
Just then, from the hole, came the happy sounds of music and song.
♪A rice ball came a rolling, rolling-rolling! (Omusubi kororin, sutton-ton!)♪
“What a funny song!”
He would like to hear this song more so he dropped another rice ball down the hole.
Then the song began again from inside the hole!

“More! Please let me hear song some more singing!”
Finally, he dropped the last rice ball down the hole.
And eventually the song was no longer heard.
“I would like to hear the song more…”
He calls out to the hole, “Let me hear that song again!” but there is no reply.
When he looked further into the hole, he slipped and fell into the hole himself!

From somewhere, he heard the song again.
The bottom of the hole was the house of mice!
The mice are all singing and getting along well with each other while making rice cakes.
“What? What’s here?”
A mouse talked the surprised old man.
“Thank you for the rice balls, sir.
We are mice who love to sing.
Let us entertain you in return for your rice balls!”
♪Flatten, flatten! (Pettan, pettan!)♪
The mice served him with alcohol(sake) and delicious foods.
They also entertained him by singing songs and dancing.
He had a great time singing and dancing with the mice.
After enjoying the party for a while, he said,
“It’s time to go home. Thank you for your hospitality!”
The mice said,
“I see. Then, please take a gift with you”
With these words, they took out two baskets with lids.
The mice asked him,
“Which one is better a large box and small box?”
He answered,
“So, I will take small one. Thank you for even giving me a gift!”
And he went home with it.
He tells his wife about the events of the day.
Then, They opened the box that was given to him together.
“What a surprise..!”
The box was packed full of gold coins (koban)!
“Well, well! What a really wonderful thing!”
They were very happy.
However, the greedy old man next door was sneaking a peek at the scene.
“I can get gold coins, if I give them some rice balls! I’ve heard good things!”
The greedy old man came to the mouse hole with a small rice balls, because of hoping to get gold coins.
“OK. This must be the mouse hole! Here goes!”
As he dropped the rice ball, came the happy sounds of music and song from the hole.

After hearing the song, the greedy old man jumped into the hole.
At the mice’s house, they were still continuing to make rice cakes.
Seeing this, the greedy old man shouted,
“Hey! I dropped the rice ball for you. Give me the gift!”
The mice said,
“Alright sir, which one is better a large box and small box?”
But the greedy old man wants to keep the all boxes for himself.
And so,
“I’ll take them both! Meow!”
He startled the mice by imitating a cat.
The mice were in a panic and they bumped into each other here and there.
After the panicking, the hole collapsed all over the place, making it dark….
“Where are my boxes? Can’t see anything!”
The greedy old man is groping his way through the darkness.
And he managed to get out of the hole.
“I’ve had a rough time of it…”
The greedy old man’s face and body were black with dirt.
The clothes he was wearing were also in tatters.
“I shouldn’t have been so greedy…”
The greedy old man went back home, shoulders dropping head hanging.
Meanwhile, the old man and the old woman shared their gold coins from mice to other villagers.
“Thank you them!”
The villagers said.
But the old man and the old woman said,
“If you want to thank anybody, thank the mice!”
Then they both looked at each other and smiled.
After that, the old man, the old woman and the villagers went to the mouse hole.
Then they dropped down more rice balls in return.
As he dropped the rice ball, came the happy sounds of music and song from the hole.

The villagers and the mice became good friends and lived together ever after!
あらすじ（日本語）
あるところに、仲のいいおじいさんとおばあさんが暮らしていました。
薪（たきぎ）を取りに行くおじいさんに、おばあさんは「おむすび」を渡します。
「おじいさんや、お腹が空いたらこのおむすびを食べてくださいね…」
おじいさんはおむすびを受け取り、
「おお！とても美味しそうなおむすびじゃ。おばあさんや、ありがとう！」
と答えました。
そして、おじいさんは山へと出かけて行きました。
山にやってきたおじいさんは、時間が経つのを忘れるくらい、木の枝をたくさん集めるのに夢中になっていました。
そして、気がつけばあっという間にお昼になりました。
「そろそろお腹が空いてきたなあ…」
おじいさんはそう思うと、景色のいい丘に座り、おむすびの入った包みを広げます。
「いただきま～す！」
おじいさんがおむすびを食べようと口を大きく開けたそのとき！
おじいさんは手を滑らせ、おむすびを落としてしまいました…。
おむすびは、コロコロと山の斜面をどんどん転がっていきます。
「待ってくれ～！」
おじいさんは慌てておむすびを追いかけます。
しかし、転がっていったおむすびは「ストン！」と地面に空いた穴に落ちてしまいました。
おじいさんは穴の中を覗きますが、穴の中は真っ暗で何も見えません。
「もったいないことをしてしまったのう…」
そう、おじいさんが残念がっていると、穴の中から愉快な歌が聞こえてきました。
「♪おむすびころりん、すっとんとん、ころころころりん、すっとんとん♪」
「面白い歌じゃ！」
おじいさんはこの歌をもっと聞きたくなり、おむすびをまた1つ穴の中へ落としました。
すると、穴の中からまた愉快な歌が聞こえてきました。
「♪おむすびころりん、すっとんとん、ころころころりん、すっとんとん♪」
「もっと歌を聞かせておくれ！」
そうしているうちに、おじいさんは全てのおむすびを穴の中に落としてしまいました。
そしてやがて歌は聞こえなくなってしまいました。
「もっと歌が聞きたいのう…」
おじいさんは穴に向かって呼びかけますが、返事はありません。
おじいさんが穴をさらに覗いたそのとき！おじいさんは足を滑らせ、自分も穴の中に落ちてしまいました！
「♪おじいさんころりん、すっとんとん、ころころころりん、すっとんとん♪」
どこからか、またあの歌が聞こえてきました。
落ちた穴の先には、なんとねずみたちの家がありました。
ねずみたちはみんなで歌を歌いながら仲良く餅つきをしています。
「なんということじゃ…」
驚くおじいさんに、1匹のねずみが話しかけます。
「おじいさん、おむすびをありがとうございました
わたしたちは歌が大好きなねずみたちです
おむすびのお礼に、おもてなしをさせてください！」
「♪ぺったん、ぺったん、ぺったんたん♪」
ねずみたちは、おじいさんにお酒やごちそうをふるまってくれました。
そして、歌を歌ったり踊りを見せ、おじいさん楽しませてくれました。
おじいさんは、ねずみたちと一緒に歌ったり踊ったりして、とても楽しく過ごしました。
しばらく宴を楽しんだおじいさんは、
「そろそろ家に帰らないといけない時間じゃ。ねずみさん、素敵なおもてなしをありがとう」
そう、ねずみたちに伝えました。
するとねずみたちは、
「そうですか…。では、お土産をぜひ持って帰ってください」
そう言うと、2つのつづら（蓋付きのカゴ）を出しました。
「大きなつづらと、小さなつづらのどちらがいいですか？」
ねずみがそう問いかけると、おじいさんは
「では、この小さなつづらをいただきます。お土産までいただけるなんて、ありがとう、ねずみさんたち」
そう言って、小さなつづらを持ち家に帰りました。
おじいさんは、今日あった出来事をおばあさんに話します。
そして、一緒にもらったつづらを開けました。
「なんということじゃ…！」
なんとつづらの中には、金の小判がぎっしりと入っていたのです！
「なんとありがたいことじゃ！」
おじいさんとおばあさんはとても喜びました。
ところが、その様子を、隣のよくばりじいさんがこっそりと覗いていました。
「おむすびで小判がもらえるのか！これはいい話を聞いたぞ…！」
よくばりじいさんは、自分も小判を手に入れようと、小さなおむすびを持ってねずみの穴へやってきました。
「ここがねずみの穴だな…！それ！」
よくばりじいさんがおむすびを落とすと、愉快な歌が聞こえてきました。
「♪おむすびころりん、すっとんとん、ころころころりん、すっとんとん♪」
歌が聞こえると、よくばりじいさんは穴の中に飛び込みました。
ねずみたちの家では、まだ餅つきの続きをしていました。
その様子を見て、よくばりじいさんは叫びます。
「俺がおむすびを落としてやったんだ！土産をよこせ！」
するとねずみたちは、
「わかりました。では、大きなつづらと、小さなつづらのどちらがいいですか？」
と問いかけます。
しかし、よくばりじいさんはつづらを全て独り占めしたいと考えます。
そこで……
「2つともよこせ！！！！！ニャー！！！」
と、猫の鳴き真似をしてねずみたちを驚かせました。
ねずみたちは大慌て！
あっちこっちにぶつかってしまいます。
ねずみたちが慌てたことで、穴の中はあちこち崩れてしまって真っ暗になってしまいました…。
「つづらはどこにあるんだ！」
よくばりじいさんは手探りで暗闇の中を這いずりまわります。
そしてなんとか穴の中から抜け出しました。
「散々な目にあったよ…まったく…」
よくばりじいさんは顔も身体も土で汚れて真っ黒です。
着ていた洋服もボロボロになってしまいました。
「よくばるんじゃなかった………」
そして、よくばりじいさんは肩を落として家に帰っていきました。
一方、おじいさんとおばあさんは、ねずみたちからもらった小判を村人たちにわけてあげました。
「ありがとう！」
住民たちは皆おじいさんとおばあさんにお礼を伝えます。
しかし、おじいさんとおばあさんは
「お礼ならねずみたちに伝えておくれ…」
そういって、2人で顔を見合わせました。
その後、おじいさん・おばあさん・村人たちはみんなでねずみの穴に行きました。
そして穴の中におむすびを落としました。
すると穴の中からまた歌が聞こえてきました。
「♪おむすびころりん、すっとんとん、ころころころりん、すっとんとん♪」
そして、村人たちとねずみたちはすっかり仲良くなり、みんなで末永く暮らしたとさ。
